Beethoven was bold in social circles and demanded equality and respect from noble patrons without the repercussions Mozart had suffered the previous decade. Thus, he quickly made his reputation as a piano virtuoso, an area where Mozart struggled only a few years earlier.
Beethoven played his own compositions and improvised on themes given to him by salon audiences. To support himself, he gave music lessons and played piano in salons-salons catering to local celerities, artists, aristocrats and intellectuals.
